Social study on the proposed abolition of slavery in Cuba and its replacement with a system of 'patronage', under which the "freed" slaves were obliged to work for their previous owner for a period of six years. The author (1818-1888), was Deputy Attorney General for Havana from 1876 to 1878. In the first appendix, he discusses ways of attracting foreign labourers to the Philippines.
