Wrappers.
The cover has been wrapped in a transparent plastic covering, which has caused the blue endpapers to stick to the covers. Staining (foxing?) to the top edge, which is not visible in the interior. At the end of the book there is a page (possibly from the Bogota magazine Flash) with a geneology of the Buendía family, and a dramatis personae; it has been carefully cut out with pinking shears, and neatly tipped in.
Presentation copy with a dedication (on the page of the printed dedication), "Para Artajerjes, GABO, 1971", with a drawing of a flower. Artajerjes (a wild and wonderful name, shared witha Persian king) is the Venezuelan poet Artajerjes Muñoz.
This cover is the one that Márquez had wanted, desiged by his friend, the Spanish-Mexican artist Vicente Rojo; however, it had not arrived in time for the first edition which came out on 30th May, and the publishers had to get an alternative design from the Argentinian artist Isis Pagano. Rojo's design, with the inverted E in the title was first used for this second edition, which came out exactly one month later.
