13 beautiful serigraphed (12 in the interior, plus the cover) plates depicting life and war in Vietnam during the struggle with the USA. Cuba's pop art posters were a powerful propaganda tool in their support for revolutionary movements worldwide.
Artist René Medrero (1933 - 1996) was one of the star designers of political propaganda posters for the Cuban revolutionary government. He became one of the principal artists for the Organización de Solidaridad de los Pueblos de África, Asia y América Latina (OSPAAAL), designing posters in support of the struggle for freedom in Zimbabwe, South Africa, and commemorating the nuclear bombing of Hiroshima, and the triumphs of the Cuban revolution. But Medreros's main subject was the US Vietnamese war, and the celebration of the Vietnamese people. In 1969 he was sent by the Castro government to Vietnam to produce a graphic chronicle of the country during their struggle, crossing the country from north to south with Viet Cong guerrilla troops. He made a second visit in 1972. He produced 42 striking depictions of the country at war.
13 of those images are reproduced here in high quality serigraphs, so charged with ink that the colours stand out in relief.
The thickness oif the ink has caused some slight wrinkling of the paper (this is inly visible on the verso of the plates), has left a small hole in another, and has cuased cracking in one plate, which has been discreetly repaired on the verso. The staples have been professionally replaced with thread. Browning on the verso of the plates (from contact with the ink, the recto is clean), some slight marking on the back cover, but these defects are minimal. Otherwise a very good copy.
No copies in WorldCat, one reference to a copy in the New York Center for Cuban Studies; we have found no other copies in any institutional libraries. No record of any copies offered for sale. Very rare. We have more photos (all the plates, etc.) on our website.
