A Spanish calligraphic specimen page. An engraved copperplate.

PRIETO (Antonio).

Ref: ch14.1546

Rico & Sinobas, p. 140. Cotarelo & Mori 880. 9 lines and an exuberantly decorative boxed subscript beneath incorporating birds, a fish, a dog chasing a goat and a grotesque face. The first line reads 'En el verso, quese sigue, está todo el abecedario, curioso [the verso is, however, blank]. Plate mark 324 x 210mm., just within the deckle edge. Watermark; three circles one above the other. The uppermost empty but surmounted by a cross, the middle circle with the letters C (then reversed) and P, the lower I6. Signed in the cartouche, 'En la Escuela de Leon yo escrivio, Antonio, Prieto, Societatis Jesu 1679'. Cotarelo describes the original drawing for this plate, but says he doesn't remember its being dated. Three tiny wormholes in right margin, one just touching the ruled border. Very rare. Muestra original grabada de caligrafía.
